We view the people and events of "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield almost entirely through the eyes and feelings of its protagonist. The author relies upon indirect presentation for her characterization of Miss Brill. Write as full of an account as you can of the nature and temperament of the story's main character.

  1. I think that Miss Brill, while she may go out and about, that she lives in her little bubble of emotions that she creates for herself. At the end she doesn't even recoginize that she was the one crying. I think that she is living the "life" of the fox fur, because she only really comes out on special occasions.

  2. I think that Miss Brill, is very childish for a grown up, let alone an English teacher.Miss Brill isn't in touch with herself. She doesn't want to come to reality with her life and that she is getting older. Miss Brill thinks she is in this glorious play when really she is in a life that no one wants her to be around. Katherine Mansfield symbolizes Miss Brill with the fox fur. The fox fur is old, worn out, and very "shut up." Miss Brill has the life like the fox fur because she old and out of sight of herself. Miss Brill thinks that the fox fur is the most beautiful thing, she also thinks more highly of herself than she is. She isn't like the Miss Brill that she thinks in her play. Secretly Miss Brill wants to be the beautiful fox fur but doesn't have the social ability to be.

  3. I think that Miss Brill is very predictable. Yes, we all like to have routines to our days, but she does the same thing every Sunday. Go to the park and watch people then on her way home she stops at the bakery. This is always what the people expect her to be doing. When she is doing all this she doesn’t even realize how lonely and ridiculous she is being. At the end of the short story she believes that it is the fox fur that is crying and not her. She thinks that it’s the fur crying because she is putting it back in to the box, when really it is her crying about her day. This comes to show that not only is Miss Brill very predictable, but she is also sheltered from what she actually wants to be and can be.

  4. I think that I agree with Shayne. Miss Brill is a woman who doesn't even know her own self or live her own life, she lives through other people, the people she watches in the park. Also, she has a very self-centered personality. She thinks that life is one big play that revolves solely around her, when the truth is that no one even cares about her. She's predictable to everybody but herself, because she doesn't even realize her own weekly habits/routines like other people do. For an English teacher you would think she'd be a lot more in tact with reality, and her own life, but she's on the other end of the spectrum, lost in obliviousness.

  5. I think that Miss Brill is a very peculiar woman, and most people her age would not act as she does. She does not break her cycle of her week to week Sunday routine and she always does the same thing. It seems that she can always identify with other peoples fault but never with her own. Miss Brill is very immature and out of touch with her own personality. In a way she acts very childish and clueless to the things around her. She is characterized as someone who seems to treasure little things that children would think were cool but normal people her age would not. For example the fox fur, her Sundays in the park, and her cake bread that sometimes would have an almond. Okay, so maybe some of these things would be nice once in a while (besides the fox fur haha) but to do the same thing every week would not be as exhilarating. I think Miss Brill needs to come to reality and try to find herself in true happiness so she can truly know what it is to live life to the fullest.

  6. I agree with Shayne. He does a good job a showing the imagery in the story and I think that its really important what he says about the fox fur and how it is only taken out on special occasions, like Miss Brill.

  7. I also like what Kacie said.
I agree with what she is saying about how Miss Brill acts childish and is not in touch with reality. I think that the way she connected the fox fur is really good too.

  8. I agree with what Kacie and Shayne said. Miss Brill is very childish and in her own "bubble". She thinks that she is part of a play and if she wasn't there every Sunday people would miss her. Well what she doesn't see is that people actually don't really like her sitting there listening to their conversations. Miss Brill doesn't ever realize this.

  9. I agree with Kara and Shayne about how Miss Brill lives her life sort of like in a bubble. She locks herself away in her "dark cupboard" of a home every day during the week except for Sunday. Sunday is like her day of coming out to feel as if she is a part of the world. But in her mind, it's like she's on a stage and she's an actress every Sunday. Although she just watches this play, she thinks that everyone still wants her around, making her really believe that she is a part of it all. But all of this shows how Miss Brill is childish and that she hasn't had some sort of an epiphany. In the end, this leads to her hearing the fur crying when she put it away, not knowing it was her own self that was producing the sound of sadness.

  10. the nature and temperment of Mrs.Brill is foolish. She lives only for Sunday, wasting away in her house. Even thought she comes out on Sunday she still pretty much does nothing. She realizes things about people for example, the lady and boy. When The lady just giggles as the man walks away ignoring her. Mrs.Brill is like the lady, clueless of what is going on around her. She also thinks that the world is a stage, and everyone is acting. She also believes that everyone would miss her, and be concerned about her if she wasn't there. Mrs. Brill is foolish in her nature, and needs some help!!

  11. Miss Brill seems like the kind of person who never grew up. she is oblivious to her actions. she believes the world is a stage and she is the actress, which imaginative like a child. she doesnt see her life as others do. she only lives for one day and maybe that one day makes her happy but she isnt accomplishing anything in life. as an english teacher you would think she would realize and have more knowledge of the world around her.
